Can you say WOOHOO?!

I had an awesome day on Lake Smith the other day, so great in fact that I decided to start this Blog and tell everyone about it. I went out with a buddy, since I am unfortunately still a backseater, but had a blast none the less.

We were on the water by about 2:30 PM and thinking that the heat was going to make the fish sluggish, but decided to give it a shot anyway. We headed out to one of my favorite spots, a cove on the South side of the lake behind the golf course with some loosly scattered cypress and a nice bed of lily pads that I call "Holman Cove" after another friend of mine that I used to fish Lake Smith with quite often. We always seemed to end up back there and no matter how bad a day he was having, he would always pull something out of the water back there... No kidding, 100% of the time!

Anyway, I generally travel pretty light, only carrying two rods and a tackle box of my favorite lures and soft baits. I like to use 5" Senko worms most of the time, ususally purple with emerald fleck or watermelon with black fleck. I'll occasionally toss a small (2 1/2") shad colored shallow diving crank bait if I think the bass are interested in something moving a bit faster. I was sticking with my "ole trusty", a purple Senko for this particular trip, I figured the only chance I had was to drop my bait right on something to trigger a bite. We cast around the base of the cypress toward the northern end of this cove for a bit with not much action, then decided to move a bit further in where there is a small grove of 3 or 4 trees growing fairly close together, and creating about a 15 foot space in the middle of the group. I tossed my worm in and along the base of one tree and pulled it back in and on the second toss, my bait barely hit the water before I was fighting a Hawg... The one and only that we boated that day and my first bass in several weeks. He weighed in at 5 Lbs, 6 oz and is back out there for anyone else to catch!
